Frontend is everything a visitor directly sees and interacts with: layout, responsiveness, animations, how a page behaves when you click something. Backend is what happens out of view — where data is stored, how accounts and logins work, the logic that decides what a user is allowed to do. Most real projects need both, but they're genuinely different skill sets, and it's common for a business to already have one half handled (a designer who delivered static mockups, or a backend built by someone else) and just need the other.
